The Russian Drama Theatre of Lithuania, the only professional theatre in Lithuania performing in Russian, presents the Russian Romance directed by Oskaras Koršunovas (it’s premiere was in 2018). The Russian Romance, written in Russian by Marius Ivaškevičius, leader of contemporary Lithuanian dramaturgy, is an important event at the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures. The play dwells on the peripeties of the vast family of Lev Tolstoy (1828-1910), the Russian and world literary classic, and the last months of the writer’s life. The writer’s wife Sofia Andreievna and her dramatic fate as the wife of a genius are in the centre of the play. Playwright M. Ivaškevičius and O. Koršunovas, leader of Lithuanian theatre directing, interpret and present the character of Tolstoy’s wife through the features of female characters of the writer’s literary works (in particular, Anna Karenina).
